Stavros uses encaustic — beeswax mixed with pigment, applied hot — to build up a surface that has the texture and warmth of ancient carved stone. The labyrinth is not Daedalus's labyrinth specifically; it is every labyrinth, every system of confusion that leads, if you persist, to the centre.
