The Harvest

Jean-Pierre Bouchard · 1857

Medium
Oil on canvas
Dimensions
115 × 88 cm

Bouchard's tender record of rural French labour elevates its subject through dignified, monumental composition. The reapers bend and gather in a choreography of shared effort under a vast, luminous sky. There is no sentiment here — the work is too honest for that — but there is a deep respect for the physical intelligence of agricultural labour and the rhythms of a life tied to the land and seasons. Bouchard lived for a year in the Barbizon forest community while working on this painting.
