Golden Hour Harbor

Émile Lefebvre · 1887

Medium
Oil on canvas
Dimensions
92 × 73 cm

Lefebvre captures the fleeting magic of dusk on the Normandy coast in this celebrated work. The harbour shimmers with reflected amber and gold as fishermen draw their boats to shore. Short, feathery brushstrokes dissolve solid forms into pure sensation — a radical departure from the academic painting of his contemporaries. The composition balances activity and stillness, the working boats framed by an expanse of radiant sky that dominates the upper two-thirds of the canvas.
