The Dance
Henri Moreau-Sablier · 1893
- Medium
- Oil on canvas
- Dimensions
- 80 × 65 cm
A swirling celebration of Parisian nightlife captured at the peak of the Belle Époque. Moreau-Sablier's confident line work and rich jewel-toned palette bring us inside a popular Montmartre dance hall. The figures blur with movement — a deliberate technique that evokes the music itself. The cropped composition, borrowing from the new vocabulary of photography, thrusts the viewer into the heart of the scene. This work was purchased directly from the artist by the Meridian Gallery in 1901.
