Calloway's masterpiece of American landscape painting presents an idealized wilderness untouched by human hands. The mirror-still lake in the foreground, the dense forests rising to the flanks of the mountain, and the hazy atmospheric perspective of the distant peaks together construct a vision of natural Eden. This is painting as spiritual experience — the landscape as a manifestation of the divine. The work exemplifies the Hudson River School's synthesis of careful naturalistic observation with transcendentalist philosophy.
