Mori spent a month on Mount Kurama before beginning this scroll, waking at 4 a.m. each day to observe the morning mist as it rose through the cedar forests. The mountain emerges — partially — from the silk ground in the way Mori observed it emerge from cloud: tentatively, without announcement.
