Papaver rhoeas — Flanders Field

Louis Bertin · 1919

Medium
Oil on canvas
Dimensions
87 × 120 cm

Bertin had served at Ypres. He returned to paint the poppies that had grown over the disturbed earth of the battlefield. The painting makes no direct reference to the war. The poppies are simply poppies — brilliant, transient, blooming in disturbed ground.
