Wisteria at the Garden Gate

Marguerite Duval · 1913

Medium
Oil on canvas
Dimensions
116 × 89 cm

The wisteria-covered gate of Duval's family house in Giverny — painted at the same period when Monet was working on his water gardens a short distance away. Duval refused to simplify the hanging clusters, spending three summers on the problem of painting purple at scale.
