About this gallery

A virtual atelier devoted to the visual legacy of John Singer Sargent. Its exhibitions present newly made, clearly attributed studies rather than replicas: cosmopolitan portraiture, fluent plein-air observation, luminous fabric, and the charged interval between a sitter's public pose and private character.

The Living Surface

Fourteen original studies after Sargent's visual language

A newly commissioned exhibition exploring the qualities that make Sargent's painting feel immediate: the decisive edge, the single loaded stroke, the orchestration of black and white, and the moment when likeness becomes character. All fourteen works are original GenMoMA Atelier creations, not historical Sargent paintings or replicas.
